Sizing a wood stove
Count the room the same way as for an electric heater: inside volume, plus 1.2 m³ for every m² of glass, tile or stone, times 1.5 for solid log walls. Then pick a stove whose maker's range includes that figure. Many Finnish makers publish only the room range, not the output in kW; where that is the case the stove pages say so.
Options you will meet
- Through-wall stoves are fed from the dressing room or from outside, so ash and smoke stay out of the hot room.
- Water tank versions heat washing water on the side of the stove or around the flue.
- Glass doors let you watch the fire; they also radiate more heat forward, so keep the stated safety distances.
Chimney, safety and permits
A wood stove needs a proper flue: an insulated steel chimney or a masonry chimney, with the safety distances to combustible walls, the floor protection and the ventilation its manual specifies. In many countries a chimney sweep or the building authority has to approve a new flue before first use, and some areas restrict wood burning: check the local rules before you buy. Keep a carbon monoxide alarm in the dressing room.
