Sauna size calculator: how big should a sauna be?

A "4-person" sauna often seats four people shoulder to shoulder. Real capacity comes from bench length: about 60 cm (24 in) per seated person and about 2 m (6.5 ft) for someone lying down. Find the room size for your group and the ceiling height that keeps heads in the hot air.

Lying down190–210 cm (75–83 in)60–70 cm (24–28 in)
  • Ceiling: 2.0–2.3 m (6.5–7.5 ft) for home saunas. Higher ceilings need more heater and leave the hot air above your head.
  • Upper bench: about 100–120 cm (39–47 in) below the ceiling, so your head sits in the hot zone (bench height guide).
  • Floor space: leave room for the heater's safety distances and for getting in and out.

Why size matters for the bill

Every cubic metre of air needs heater power and energy. Two people need about a 1.5 × 2 m room, not a 2.5 × 2.5 m one: the bigger room needs a heater one size up and roughly a third more energy per session.
